Meet Moose.
He helps otters.
This happy little aussie/spaniel mix started his life being abandoned outside a dental office. Now he works with Working Dogs for Conservation to help protect wildlife and wild places around the world.
Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training rescued, rehomed, and career-change dogs into skilled conservation canines. With their incredible noses, these dogs help protect wildlife and wild places around the world—finding rare and endangered species, detecting invasive plants and animals (including wildlife diseases), helping to stop wildlife trafficking and even tracking down poachers.
Collaboration is at the heart of WD4C’s work. Partnering with researchers, conservationists, and scientists allows our teams to make broad, lasting impacts. Today, WD4C is the largest and longest-standing conservation canine organization in the US, with experience across 45 U.S. states, 36 countries, and more than 110 different scent targets. These range from shark fin, ivory, rhino horn and snares to black-footed ferrets, geometric tortoises, bumblebee nests, and even rare plants like Lloyd’s mariposa cactus, and so much more.
Most recently, WD4C teams supported an innovative project led by the Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF), and the University of Alberta to detect river otter and sea otter scat for genetic and dietary analysis. To our knowledge, this was the first time conservation dogs had ever been trained to detect sea otter scat - and they did it! The data collected will help scientists better understand otter populations and their role in supporting ecosystems.
We are "otterly" delighted to partner with Big Picture Greetings for this card set, celebrating both wildlife conservation and rescue dogs through the efforts of Working Dogs for Conservation.
Thank you for supporting this work through your purchase and helping us protect wildlife, wild places, and the dogs who make it possible.
